Her patient-first approach, professionalism and collaborative care were put on display through the story of Michael Lancellot, a retired executive who faced significant hearing challenges, from sensorineural hearing loss to sudden hearing loss to vertigo.
While Dr. Duran fitted Michael with his first hearing aids—and he was “so pleased with the doctor’s work that in the years that followed, he repeatedly recommended Dr. Duran”—he eventually needed a BiCROS hearing system, which required seeing a different audiologist. Even though Michael was technically using a competitor’s services, Dr. Duran was very encouraging: “‘She said, I understand, I know the audiologist, and he is highly qualified. She showed complete integrity and professionalism’”. Later, when Michael needed a cochlear implant, which again required the services of another audiologist, Dr. Duran showed Michael complete support and care once again. “Her modus operandi is helping people, and she helped me immensely in reaching my decision to get the implant”, says Michael.
Dr. Duran says that is all part of being a responsible audiologist. “In the process of providing the best hearing health care, I always have to do what’s in the patient’s best interest,” she says. “And sometimes that means recommending another audiologist, or an ENT or another treatment that requires another kind of doctor. The role of an audiologist is to lead the patient in the right direction, and sometimes that goes beyond just fitting someone with hearing devices.”
